I'm incredibly fortunate for having the career that I have. And time and again, like an out-of-body experience, I find myself reflecting on that fact.

These are times when I encounter a particularly challenging task, or - like today - have a good time surrounded by people who are passionate and working toward the same goal.

As the saying goes: if you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room. And as a freelancer and as a writer I'm all too often challenged in this area, in that usually there's no room at all.

When I get to visit a client's office, and spend time with the team, I always end up giddy and overflowing with joy. It's an intense experience, made even more intense by the time constraints. Both sides are trying to make the most out of the opportunity, and that means long hours, hard work, and lots of things happening all at once.

Normally, this type of pace wouldn't be sustainable, or even necessary. But these times are just generating an unbelievable amount of energy that otherwise wouldn't be possible.

I love it.

The projects I can get done during these sprints are fun and carry over my excitement into the regular work days, when I'm alone and keeping in touch with others via email. Normal days are more relaxed, and tasks are spread out.

When I get to work on-site, there's always an urgency, a tempo crackling with energy. It's not my natural state of being, and probably why it feels so refreshing and exciting.

It's just joyful.
